A circular multi-feed knitting machine comprises a patterning mechanism which is controlled by a jacquard system. As shown in Fig. 4 jack selecting members 7 are pushed into their operative position (shown full lines) by the armatures 8a of electromagnets 8 against the action of springs 20. The jack selecting members are in a vertical stack and are pivoted about the rod 13, their limits of movement being restricted by the abutment of one or other of the sides of a hole 22 against a vertical pin 21. A vertical catch 14 is arranged to separate the selected and unselected members by being held between the projections 7a on the members and it is held in this position by the abutment of the arm 16 on the surface of the rotating needle cylinder. When the arm 16 reaches the depression 18b the catch 14 is released and the selecting members 7 return to their inoperated position under the action of the springs 20 and push back the armatures to their starting position ready for re-selection. A modification of thie selecting mechanism appears in Fig. 5 (not shown) in which a lever 27 which follows a cam track in the cylinder holds all the selecting members in their operative position prior to actuation of the electromagnets and as this lever moves it allows selected armatures to hold the selecting members in their operative positions whilst non selected ones are returned to inoperative positions by means of springs. A perforated jacquard tape 9 passes over a perforated drum 10 and fingers 36 on arms 34 of a bell crank lever (Fig. 8) cause operation of a microswitch 37 which passes information to the solenoids previously described. A cam 38 rotates to lift the fingers 36 clear of the holes to prevent accidental breakage when the drum 10 is moved. Switches 47 operated by a cam 49 in the drum 10 (Fig. 9) work in conjunction with the microswitches 33 to cause actuation of the solenoids. The bell lever 33 may be replaced by photo-cells operated by light bulbs held in the drum 10 to cause energization of the solenoids 8. Fig. 14 (not shown) shows a patterning unit which is applied to a stationary cylinder machine.
