Abstract

990,438. Tube joints. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Feb. 12, 1964 [Feb. 18, 1963], No. 6435/63. Heading F2G. In a method of forming a joint between two tubular members 1, 4 of metal and having a grooved sealing faces 3, 6, the members are assembled with a soft metal washer 7 between the faces and a portion of at least one of the members is deformed permanently in such a manner that the gasket is rendered plastic to effect a seal between the faces. As shown in Fig. 1, the tube 4 is screwed into the tube 1, the washer 7 being positioned between the grooved annular faces 3, 6 and a ring 9 positioned around the tube 1 provides a temporary support while a retractable tube expander deforms a portion 5 of the tube 4 to take up the radial clearance in the screw-threaded engagement 8 and to extend that portion upwardly to compress the gasket 7; the latter flows plastically to substantially fill the grooves in the faces 3, 6. In modifications: (a) the tubes are connected end-to-end by an internally screw-threaded collar and (b) the gasket 16, Fig. 2, is annular in form.
