Abstract

988,817. Gas turbine engines; engine turning gear. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 16, 1964 [March 19, 1963], No. 10872/63. Headings F1G and F1K. A gas turbine engine comprises a combustion chamber also an air compressor and a fuel pump both of which supply the combustion chamber, and both of which are driven by an electric motor until the engine becomes self-sustaining, the electric motor thereafter continuing to drive only the fuel pump. In the embodiment shown, the gas turbine engine is a starter turbine and comprises an electric motor 1 which drives the air compressor of the engine (not shown) through shaft 2, an over-running clutch, 3 gearing 4 and shaft 5. The electric motor also. drives through shaft 2 and gearing 6, 7 a fuel pump 8 which delivers to the engine combustion chamber. When the engine starts, the compressor is driven by the turbine and the clutch 3 allows the driven shaft to over-ride the shaft 2 of the electric motor, the fuel pump 8 continuing to be driven by the motor 1. A speed responsive switch SW1 is connected in the supply circuit of the motor, the switch disconnecting the circuit upon a predetermined speed of the shaft 10. A second speed responsive switch SW2 is connected in the circuit, the switch acting to disconnect the circuit when a pre-determined speed of the engine being started is obtained.
