Abstract

985,435. Refrigerated vehicles. SERVICE GARAGES (SOUTH-EASTERN) Ltd. Sept. 6, 1962 [Nov. 20, 1961; March 16, 1962], Nos. 41501/61 and 10108/62. Heading F4H. [Also in Division B7]. A vehicle is provided with a mechanically powered refrigeration unit located above and separated from the vehicle propulsion unit, and drive means, including a belt drive, are provided to transmit drive from the propulsion to the refrigeration unit. As shown, the rearmounted propulsion unit is connected through a centrifugal clutch 1, a belt drive and an electromagnetic clutch 7 to an electric motor 6, the latter being connected by a further belt drive to the compressor 2 of the refrigerating system. Thus the propulsion unit drives compressor 2 while the vehicle is in motion and the electric motor 6, which may be connected to an external power supply, performs this function while the vehicle is stationary and the centrifugal clutch 1 disengaged. Thermostatic control may be effected in dependence on the temperature of storage cabinets 9 or of an icecream dispenser 4 by either operation of clutch 7 when the compressor is powered by the propulsion unit or by cutting in or out the electric motor 6 when this is the source of power. Alternatively a thermostatic expansion valve may be incorporated in the refrigerating system. The ice-cream dispenser is powered by the vehicle propulsion unit through a belt drive, a constant speed unit 3 and a flexible drive shaft 5. A sink unit 10 is provided and has a hot water supply heated by the refrigeration system. In a second embodiment the electromagnetic clutch and ice-cream dispenser are omitted and a generator driven by the propulsion unit is provided, while in a third embodiment both clutches are omitted. In the latter embodiment a fan is provided for cooling the refrigerating unit and the separate storage compartments are maintained at different temperatures by the provision of two thermostatic expansion valves in the refrigerating system.
