Abstract

985,114. Drying webs. MEAD CORPORATION. Aug. 17, 1962 [Feb. 13, 1962], No. 31656/62. Heading F4G. [Also in Division D2] In an apparatus for drying a web 30 of material, e.g. paper, the web together with a finely-woven liquid transferring felt 13 and an open mesh fabric 20 of liquid-receiving material passes through the nip of a pair of press rolls 11, 12 to expel the liquid from the web through the felt to the fabric which transfers the moisture by surface tension forces as a thin film 33 to the roll surface on the exit side of the nip, from which surface it is removed by a wiping or doctor blade 28, 29. The fabric is trained by idler, guide and stretch rolls 21 . . . 25 to run around the press roll 12 within the run of the felt which is trained by rolls 14 . . . 19, the felt, fabric and web being separated at the exit side of the nip. The fabric and felt are guided around the lower press roll 12 of the vertically arranged pair but in a modification, Fig. 3, not shown, they are guided about the upper roll. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, not shown, three press rolls are vertically arranged to form two nips, the felt and fabric being trained to run sequentially through the top and bottom nips, with the fabric running within the run of the felt and in other modifications two nips are formed by two separate pairs of press rolls, Fig. 5, not shown, and a central press roll has multiple pressing rolls arranged thereabout, Fig. 6, not shown. An internally-heated Yankee drier may form one of the press rolls. Specification 827,754 is referred to.
