A device for creating pressure variations in the body comprises a chamber for liquid under pressure, the chamber having a sealable opening for receiving the body or a part thereof and means for creating pressure pulses in the liquid when in the chamber. The opening 11 is closed around the body part by inflating a tube 13. As the chamber is filled with liquid, e.g. water, through an inlet 19, air escapes through a manometer 20. The liquid is maintained at the desired temperature by circulating it by a pump through a heat exchanger 24. The pressure of liquid in the chamber is varied by a piston 32 reciprocated in a cylinder 31 communicating with the chamber. The piston is connected for reciprocation by rods 34, 39 to an eccentric pin 41 which is rotated by a motor 45. The piston and cylinder may be replaced by a flexible diaphragm (Fig. 3, not shown) which forms the closed end of the chamber and which is connected for reciprocation to a pin which travels in an eccentric cam groove rotated by the motor. Additional means for -varying the liquid pressure may comprise a piston adjustably fixed in a cylinder, which communicates with the chamber, or a piston operated by a solenoid against a spring to provide an increase or decrease in pressure of short duration. The chamber may be constructed to receive the whole body of the patient who is provided with a breathing mask. The apparatus and the patient may be disposed in an enclosure in which the air pressure is greater than atmospheric by 1 to 50 1bs. per square inch.
