An elongated roll 23 of sheet material is supported in a machine and cut into axially shorter rolls by a pair of axially-spaced rotatable cutting blades 31, 32, between which is partially disposed a travelling sweeper 38 to remove cut material from between the blades and prevent binding as the blades move through the elongated roll. As described, the roll of material 23, which is rotatably supported on a bearing rotatable on a mandrel 21, is gripped and rotated by a chuck 19 driven by a motor 17 and an infinitely-variable speed pulley 18. The cutters 31, 32 are located on a movable carriage 24, and may be rotated on a common axle 33 by a motor 34, or by frictional engagement with the roll 23, or held stationary e.g. when cutting soft polyethylene. The cutters, the supporting axle 33 and the motor 34 are carried by a cross slide 36 which is movable perpendicular to the axis of the roll 23 by a piston and cylinder arrangement 37, which may be controlled by limit switches to interrupt forward travel of the blades when they approach the mandrel. The sweeper, in the form of a chain saw 38, fitting into the gap between the blades 31, 32, is looped around a sprocket 39 and around a bearing 47 having a P.T.F.E. layer 48, the teeth of the saw 38 extending outwards almost to the edges of the blades 31, 32, and is driven either by a motor 41, or via a belt by the blade motor 34. Its speed may differ from that of the blades and it may run in the same or opposite direction. A chip removal vacuum-hose on the carriage 24 has its end directly beneath the area of contact between the knife and the roll 23. The carriage includes a microswitch 43 connected to a carriage drive motor 26, to prevent moving the carriage longitudinally while a cut is being made. The relative speeds of the roll and the blades may be varied by a speed compensating mechanism to keep cutting friction down during an actual cutting operation, and in a modification the axis of the blade-axle 33 is at the same height as that of the mandrel 21 to prevent twisting of the blades.
