961,568. Statistical apparatus. BOLT BERANEK & NEWMAN Inc. Aug. 25,1961 [Sept. 19, 1960], No. 30809/61. Heading G4M. Apparatus for selecting a card or the like from a stack, and reading information magnetically recorded thereon, comprises a plurality of mechanical releasing members supporting each card of the stack at coded indicia regions, means for selectively operating the releasing members to permit a card with the selected code to separate from the stack, means to cause the card to travel along a predetermined path, and magnetic reading means disposed along the path to read the information from the card. Width-collapsible supporting members 1, 2, 1<SP>1</SP>, 2<SP>1</SP> pass through cut-outs A, B provided at the upper edge of each card, the mouth of each cut-out A being large enough to receive freely a supporting member, whereas cut-outs B have narrower mouths so that the supporting member passing therethrough may be disengaged therefrom only when it is in the collapsed position. Each card is thus supported only by those members passing through cut-outs B on the card, the coding of each card being different from the rest. The collapsing of each supporting member is effected by depressing a corresponding key 1<SP>11</SP>, 2<SP>11</SP>, 1<SP>111</SP>, 2<SP>111</SP>. When, for example keys 2<SP>11</SP>, 2<SP>111</SP> are depressed, members 2, 2<SP>1</SP> are collapsed and only card I-I will fall from the stack. The selected card drops onto a belt 5 at the bottom of a shoot 3 and is moved to the right, during which movement information stored on a plurality of horizontal strips 29 of magnetic tape on the card is scanned and extracted by corresponding reproducing members 29<SP>1</SP>. The card is then automatically returned to the back of the stack. Alternatively, Fig. 3 (not shown), the data on each card may be stored on vertical strips of magnetic tape, and the extraction of the information thereon may be effected by reproducing members while the card is falling within shoot 3.
