A Roots blower having a pair of intermeshing bilobar pistons 3, 5 rotating in a casing 1 includes a resonator chamber 7 communicating through ports 6 with the displacement chambers 2 as the pistons rotate and through restricted diameter non-oxillational tubes 8 with the outlet chamber 9. In operation, pressure medium at delivery pressure flows slowly into the resonant chamber 7 and on a port 6 being uncovered by its piston 3 or 5, the pressure medium in the chamber 7, now at delivery pressure, discharges into the displacement chamber 2 to raise the pressure therein before discharging into the outlet chamber 9 to prevent surge pulsations in the delivery line, and reduce noise. Instead of the tubes 8, slit-shaped transfer ports may surround the outlet chamber 9. The resonator chamber may be divided by a partition into two chambers so that each piston and its accompanying displacement chamber has its own resonator chamber.
