Abstract
959,713. Token sensing devices; checking receipts. KINS DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. May 15, 1963 [Feb. 15, 1962], No. 5816/62. Headings G4T and G4V. The invention relates to a system of credit vending in which a subscriber to the system is given a check on which he is identified by a set of punched holes, a second set of punched holes on the check giving access to vending machines upon insertion into appropriate sensing means which not only releases a given quantity of goods but also records the identity of the subscriber and the value of the transaction. The check is held in the sensing means until press buttons selecting the goods required have been operated followed by a button to record the order. The goods are held inaccessible until the check is withdrawn from the sensing means to ensure that the subscriber does not leave his credit check in the machine. The records are collected periodically for the preparation of addressed bills. Instead of keeping a record of a subscriber's account the check may be purchased for a given sum and the vending machine may punch the check in units to reduce the amount of credit it displays until, when the credit is exhausted the check no longer frees the machine. The check may be used as a season ticket for the use of transport or to obtain access to stadia; it may also be used to obtain access to petrol pumps. Testing validity of check. The check may incorporate a transparent region such that it transmits light only at one particular angle, this being achieved by ruling the surfaces of the region with parallel lines. A diffraction grating may be incorporated in the transparent region to characterize the transmitted light, or one side of the region may comprise semi-cylindrical lenses while the other has a series of parallel opaque lines. Alternatively the region may be such as to trasmit only certain wavelengths. The check may incorporate a resistive strip or have a characteristic magnetic permeability, dielectric constant, or piezo-electric character. The check may fluoresce when subjected to a characteristic radiation or it may bend when heated to break a contact due to its incorporation of a bi-metallic strip.
