[Also in Division B7] The control member of a ground-based flight trainer is loaded to simulate the feel during actual flight, using a displacement transducer and a velocity transducer to determine the basic value of the load, these signals being modified in a computer by factors representing the simulated flight conditions. As shown (Fig. 2), movement of the control produces a signal from a displacement pick-off which is modified in a flight computer in accordance with the static forces, e.g. friction, elasticity, Mach number &c. This is fed into an amplifier A together with dynamic signals from a tachogenerator G, and opposed by the signals from the displacement pick-off of a hydraulic servomotor, and from a force transducer measuring the load on the control column. The output from amplifier A is fed through a phase-sensitive rectifier to produce a D. C. signal energizing the servomotor. The signal from the tachogenerator G may be modified by shaping networks to give a desired loading variation. Simulating the viscous damping of the movement of the control mechanism and the mechanical assemblies coupled to it.
