Abstract
951,661. Reducing surface friction; hydraulic jet propulsion. DOWSETT HOLDINGS Ltd. April 18, 1962 [Jan. 23, 1961 (3); May 16, 1961], Nos. 2608/61, 2609/61, 2611/61 and 17707/61. Headings B7A, B7M and B7V. A marine craft 1 provided with jet propulsion of the type having at least one pump 6 which draws water through an inlet duct 7 having one or more openings and delivers it through one or more discharge ducts 8, has at least one longitudinal recess 2 provided in the underside of the hull and means for introducing air or other gas into the recess to form a gas cushion. In Figs. 1 and 2 the recesses 2 have riser portions 9, through which the ducts 8 discharge, and portions 5 which slope upwards from the aft. The recesses 2 are separated by a keel member 3. The pumps 6 are driven through gearings 10 by gas turbines 11, the exhausts from which are led to the recesses by ducts 12 to be discharged in the same general direction as the water jets. The exhaust gas discharge orifice may be situated between transversely spaced water discharge orifices so that the water jets form lateral curtains to contain the gas. The water and gas discharge ducts may be concentric so that one fluid may act as an ejector for the other. The gas may be bled from the gas turbine compressor. Control valves may be provided in the discharge ducts and deflectors in the recesses. Supplementary water discharge orifices may also be provided for movement control of the craft. The gas turbines may be vented to atmosphere when starting or going slowly. The water jet may be discharged through the transom.
