Abstract

951,598. Feeding sheets. EKCO-ALCOA CONTAINERS Inc. Nov. 11, 1960 [Nov. 1, 1959], No. 38744/60. Heading B6B. [Also in Division B8] In apparatus for filling and sealing containers (see Division B8), the sealing is effected by a rotary device, Figs. 13 and 17, to which containers are fed by an endless conveyer 22 having carriers 12 each supporting a filled container. The conveyer engages a continuously rotating sprocket wheel 100, and during the passage of a container carrier from the position 0 degrees, Fig. 13, to a position 95 degrees, a disc-like cap 6 is sealed to the container top. Each container carrier 12 is associated with a cap applying head 130 and a cap magazine 102; the magazines are carried in the sprocket wheel and arranged in pairs, and each houses a pile of caps 6 urged upwards by a spring 122 and follower 120. Each pair is supported by a clamp 108 on an arm 114. The uppermost cap engages edges of overlying plates 126, Fig. 16, and is removed radially outwards by a suction head 130; the cap is moved upwardly and radially outwardly until it is positioned above a filled container in its carrier, and it then moves downwards to be sealed on to the container top. The head comprises an apertured disc 150 of rubber within a hollow body 154 connected to a suction line 160. The head, Figs. 15 and 17, is connected to a plunger vertically slidable in a sleeve 166 and urged downwardly by a spring 170 abutting a plug 174. The head and plunger assembly are mounted in a slide 140 engaging a guideway 141 in a member 141 in a member 132 rotating with the wheel, and as the wheel rotates a cam roller 176 of the plug 174 engages a cam track on a fixed member 148 to provide vertical movement of the head. A cam roller 142 on the slide is positioned in a cam slot in the fixed member 148 and provides the inner and outer radial movements of the head. Safety mechanisms are provided to prevent a head which has not picked up a cap from moving downwardly into sealing position. A valve 206 associated with each head controls the application of reduced pressure thereto, and all such valves are automatically operated by fixed cams surrounding the device.
