Abstract

947,883. Photo-electric direction finding. GIANNINI CONTROLS CORPORATION. March 20, 1961, No. 10081/61. Heading H4D. [Also in Divisions G1 and H1] A device which can indicate the elevation or azimuth of a source of light comprises a partspherical carrier 100 having three layers superposed thereon, a layer of resistance material 112, a photoconductive layer 114 and a conductive layer 116. Light is focused on to the photoconductive layer by lens 104 to cause conduction between the resistive layer and the conductive layer. With the layer broken at 120 by an insulating section, at either side of which electrical connections 122 and 124 are made to a source of potential difference, the potential appearing at the conductive layer due to the conduction of the photo-conductive layer will correspond to the azimuth of the light source, alternatively if connections are made to the circumferential edges of the resistive layer the voltage picked off will depend on the elevation of the source. Other forms of potentiometers or variable resistors are described (see Division H1). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 914,860.
