Abstract

The invention comprises alkyl dinitrophenol esters of the formula:- <FORM:0935398/IV(a)/1> wherein X represents a C9-12 alkyl radical and R represents a C3-4 alkyl radical. The compounds are prepared by reacting an alkyl dinitrophenol of the formula:- <FORM:0935398/IV(a)/2> with an alkanoic acid chloride of the formula R.COCl, the reaction being preferably conducted in the presence of an acid binding agent in an organic solvent and at a temperature of between 30 DEG and 50 DEG C. Alkyl dinitrophenol starting materials are prepared by nitration of the corresponding alkylphenols.ALSO:A fungicidal composition comprises an alkyl dinitrophenol ester of the formula <FORM:0935398/VI/1> wherein X represents a C9-12 alkyl radical and R represents a C3-4 alkyl radical, together with a carrier such as a diatomaceous earth, talc, pyrophyllite, calcium carbonate, water, or an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon. The compositions may contain other fungicides, insecticides or pesticides, surface-active agents or emulsifying agents.
