Abstract

[Also in Groups XXIII and XXIV] A machine for generating a turbine blade 5, or an impeller wheel, by a milling or grinding tool 6 comprises providing one relative movement between tool and work (e.g. work rotation) by a mechanism 34, 35, 25 converting rotary motion into oscillating movement (e.g. an oscillating crank gear 25), and a second relative uniform movement (e.g. longitudinal movement of a carriage 13), the two drives being interconnected by a transmission mechanism 29, 30, 31, 39, 38 with a selectively variable transmission ratio. The work 20 is mounted by indexing means 23 on a shaft 19 oscillated by the adjustable crank 25. The shaft 19 is carried on the carriage 13 traversed by a screw 17. The oscillating movement of the work is started by engaging a clutch 28. Engagement of a further clutch 40 enables adjustment movements to be imposed on the work through the differential gearing 37. The mechanism may be modified to enable both sides of a blade to be machined in a single pass. In a modification, a greater variety of curves is produced by incorporating into the system two further cranks 50, 51, Fig. 4.
