Water is heated and stored in two coaxial cylinders 11, 12 by electric heaters 14, 15. The heater 14 is switched on in the top cylinder 11 when a small quantity of hot water is required but both heaters are switched on if a large quantity is required. A water supply pipe is connected to the inlet 16 to the tank 12 and an outlet pipe is connected to the top tank 11 at an outlet 17.
