Abstract

927,361. Pallets for handling loads. J. D. BILLINGTON. March 29, 1961 [Dec. 29, 1959], No. 36676/59. Class 78 (4). A pallet-like vehicle body, Fig. 1, has upper and lower load platforms and means are provided for raising and lowering the upper platform. The upper platform is attached to four nuts, one at each corner, which move up and down screws located within uprights 12. The screws are rotated by a chain 32, Fig. 3, which passes round sprockets 31 on the screws and is driven by an hydraulic motor 39 through a reduction gear-box 38. Hydraulic power, supplied through lines 41, is derived from a power take-off on the vehicle carrying the pallet. The load, e.g. motor cars, is secured by hooks and hawsers wound on ratchet-controlled shafts 46. Both upper and lower platforms have retractable loading ramps 50, Fig. 1, comprising hinged flaps 51 the inner one of which may be folded back against the edge of the platform to form an incline as shown. The pallet is locked on the chassis of the carrying vehicle by rollers which engage and bear down on wedgeended bars 54, Fig. 2. The rollers are mounted on shoes which are moved inwards by worms. In addition, hook-like members on the chassis may be rotated into engagement with the pallet. Detachable ramps are provided to allow cars to be driven on to the pallet, the upper platform being loaded in its lowered position and subsequently raised. The pallet may be mounted on a trailer in which case bridging members are used between the trailer and towing lorry to allow cars to be driven over the trailer and on to a pallet on the lorry. Apertures 53 receive the tines of a fork-lift truck.
