Abstract

927,112. Gyroscopic apparatus. BARDEN CORPORATION. March 28, 1960 [May 28, 1959], No. 10810/60. Class 97 (3). [Also in Group XXXVI] In order to reduce static friction between the brushes and slip rings of a slip ring and brush unit, means are provided for continuously oscillating the brush and slip ring relative to one another. As shown the unit is incorporated in a gyroscope so that static friction need not be overcome when the gyroscope rotor housing 12 rotates relative to the gimbal 14. The hollow shaft 20 of housing 12 carries slip rings 90 and is rotatably mounted in bearings 16, 18 in a support 22. The support 22 is itself mounted for rotation in bearings 60, 62 carried by gimbal 14. The brushes 36 are mounted on a block 34 carried by the support 22. Mounted in housing 64 is a magnetic spool 24 having a continuously energized A.C. winding and poles 100 which surround the poles 30 of a permanent magnet 28 secured to support 22. On energization, the support 22 and hence the brushes oscillate with respect to the slip rings.
