Abstract

926,309. Coin-freed vending apparatus. STANDARD PACKAGING CORPORATION. Nov. 28, 1961 [March 6, 1961], No. 42506/61. Class 27. A coin-freed machine for vending cards contained in envelopes 32 has the envelopes suspended in groups on inclined rails 67 which are arranged in a number of parallel rows and a particular group is selected - by numbered buttons 21 and lettered buttons 23 which cause a carriage 47 to move sideways until it is above a selected row and then operate one of several trip levers 101 spaced along the carriage so that a single envelope is released from the group. The envelopes have hooks 93 stuck to them and pegs on the hooks ensure that they are spaced apart on the rails 67. A motor 55 and gear 57 engaging a rack 59 drive the carriage and the trip levers 101 are each actuated by a separate solenoid. After selection of a card in the display rack above the machine and insertion of a coin in a slot 27, the carriage 47, if not already in the extreme right-hand position, is returned there and operates a stop switch 125; the control buttons 21, 23 are also unlatched so that a selection can be made by the purchaser and the two depressed buttons are then latched in position. The carriage moves across until it operates a switch 119 in the row according to the button 21 and a trip solenoid is energized according to the button 23. The solenoid lowers a trip lever 101, Fig. 8, to tilt a release member 69 so that a forward limb 81 moves clear of the lowest hook and a rear limb 79 moves in front of the next hook, to hold up the remaining envelopes. The released envelope falls on to a plate 109 on a yoke 53 carried below the carriage 47 and operates a delivery switch to return the carriage to its right-hand position; subsequently, the envelope slides down a sloping floor 29 for delivery to the purchaser. If no card is available for delivery from the selected group, the delivery switch is not operated and the carriage continues to the left until it hits a reversing switch 121 and is then brought back to the right-hand position. Just before engaging the stop switch 125, the carriage closes an " empty " switch 123 and a lamp is illuminated to indicate that the purchaser should make another selection or have his money returned by pressing a button 28.
