Abstract

924,478. Hydraulic shock-absorbers. WOODHEAD MONROE Ltd. Oct. 6, 1961 [Nov. 24, 1960], No. 40438/60. Class 108(3). In a double-acting hydraulic shock absorber of the kind comprising a valved piston 11 slidable within a pressure tube 10 having a foot valve 12 air, leaking from within the shock absorber through a piston rod seal 16, passes through an orifice 25 leading from an annular recess 22 in the upper face of the seal 16 and into the narrow annular space between the tube 10 and an anti-aeration tube 24 disposed in a reservoir chamber 13. The orifice may include a spring-loaded ball valve 26. Due to an O- type sealing ring 23, retained in the recess 22 by an inturned end portion of the anti-aeration tube 24, only a small amount of oil enters the chamber above the guide 16 such oil being returned to the reservoir 13 by means of ducts 27 between the anti-aeration tube 24 and the inside of an end cap 21 for the reservoir 13. A packing 20, out of direct contact with oil, is lubricated by an oil mist.
