A bat 15 of absorbent, fibrous material is highly compressed along spaced lines 20 before being less densely compressed into its final cylindrical form as a catamenial tampon. The highly compressed lines form areas of increased capillarity which assist in rapidly conducting fluid towards the interior of the tampon.
