In waste-disposal apparatus in which breakers 3 carried by an impeller 2 mounted on a motordriven shaft 4 coact with a stationary set of teeth 6, a toothed ring 13 is coupled to the shaft 4 and access to the ring 13 is provided by an opening 17 in the body 1 of the apparatus, either edge 19, Fig. 2, of the opening providing a fulcrum for a lever 20 passed through the opening to engage the teeth 18 of the ring 13 so that the lever may be moved pivotally about the fulcrum to rotate the ring 13 and hence the impeller 2 so as to release any articles such as cutlery which may be jammed between the breakers 3 and the teeth 6. The ring 13 overlies the shaft bearing 5 and a seal 15<SP>1</SP> and is beneath a seal 15. Alternatively, a fulcrum pin is removably carried by body 1 to extend across the opening 17 centrally between the edges 19, the pin being receivable in an opening of a lever which may be inserted through the opening 17, the lever having one or more teeth at one end to mesh with the teeth 18 of the ring 13.
