Abstract
915,757. Cathode-ray tubes. AMERICAN OPTICAL CO. Feb. 22, 1961 [Feb. 22, 1960], No. 6553/61. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XXIII] A cathode-ray tube screen includes a plurality of spaced rodlike members 15 of luminescent material of uniform size each in end contact with, and normal to, a faceplate 11 and each having its side walls coated with an opaque material 14. As shown, a foraminous glass plate 16 has its apertures coated with opaque, reflective material 14 by gas-plating, evaporation or chemical silvering, and filled with luminescent material 15 either before or after it is sealed to faceplate 11. The plates 11 and 16 may be made integrally of a photo-sensitive glass, the apertures being formed by exposure to ultra-violet light and selective etching in hydrofluoric acid of the exposed areas. The luminescent material may be inserted in the form of a liquid or paste mixture of phosphor powder and water glass or by vapour deposition. Alternatively, rods of luminescent material may be formed initially, attached to the rear surface of the faceplate and coated with opaque, reflective material which may fill the spaces between the rods. A thin reflective layer of aluminium may be applied over the rear surface of the phosphor.
