Abstract

A non-aqueous primer composition having a pigment volume in the range of 33% to 53% contains a phosphate of calcium or zinc in amount of at least 33% of the total pigment volume, as a ferrous corrosion inhibitor. As dispersion media, drying oils, drying oil alkyds, styrenated and vinyltoluenated alkyds, modified phenolic resin tung/linseed oleo-resinous media, comprising a mixture of phenolic resin and resin cooked into a tung/linseed oil, dispersion resin/alkyd combinations, wherein the dispersion resin is a tung oil phenolic resin metallic soap complex dispersed in a solvent, amine-formaldehyde resin/plasticizing resin stoving combinations, butyl titanate, butyl titanate/silicone resin combinations, polyurethane type media, epoxide resin esters and epoxide resin/anine or polyamine systems are mentioned. Phosphates which may be used include zinc phosphate, tricalcium phosphate, di-calcium dihydrogen phosphate, monocalcium tetrahydrogen di-phosphate and naturally occurring phosphate such as ground moroccan phosphate. Comparative examples are given of linseed oil based paints containing calcium plumbate, tricalcium phosphate, zinc phosphate and red lead as corrosion inhibitors; of phenolic/tung oil medium with added linseed oil and containing Paris white and zinc chromate or zinc phosphate; of p cresylic resin tung/linseed oil varnish with added linseed oil and iron oxide or zinc phosphate; and of linseed oil pentaerythritol alkyd medium containing calcium plumbate or zinc phosphate. The primers are applied as one or more coatings to bright or rusted steel panels, and air dried or stoved. In Example 5 a gloss coat is also applied. The Provisional Specification refers also to the use of non-ferrous metal salts of oxy-acids of phosphorus including, e.g. lead phosphate, basic lead phosphate, dibasic lead phosphite, lithium phosphate and barium phosphate, in place of or in conjunction with known ferrouscorrosion inhibiting pigments, e.g. red lead, calcium plumbate, zinc chromate, or metallic benzoates as disclosed in Specification 904,861.ALSO:A non-aqueous primer composition having a pigment volume in the range of 33 to 53% contains a phosphate of calcium or zinc in amount of at least 33% of the total pigment volume, as a ferrous corrosion inhibitor.
