[Also in Group XII] A process for melting ferrous metals in a cupola includes the step of feeding oxygen to the charge through a separate set of tuyeres 7 disposed below the main air supply tuyeres 5, the tuyeres 5 and 7 being fed from wind belts 6 and 8, respectively. Intermittent oxygen injection may be used to compensate for low quality coke, to give hotter metal after a furnace shutdown, or to give hotter metal for subsequent desulphurization, recarburization or nodularization treatments. Also continuous injection may be used to give hotter metal, increased metal output, or increased carbon content.
