901,226. Automatic fluid flow control systems. COUNCIL FOR SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH. Jan. 15, 1960 [Jan. 16, 1959], No. 1618/59. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXIX] A controller for the automatic control of the flow of fluids comprises an electromagnetic control valve 1 in series with the outlet 3 of which is connected a calibrated constriction 2 across which are connected the limbs 4, 5 of a U-tube containing an opaque fluid, the meniscus 8 of the liquid in limb 4 being located between a light source 7 and a photo-cell 6 connected in the control circuit of the valve 1. In operation, changes in the rate of flow through the constriction 2 produce changes in the level of the meniscus 8 and hence variation in the output current of the photo-cell 6, which output current energizes electromagnetic means for controlling the displacement of a diaphragm in the valve 1, thereby controlling the flow through the valve at the desired mean rate. The valve control circuit may include a transistor amplifier (Fig. 3, not shown).
