Abstract

901,081. Punching jacquard cards. DUNN ENGINEERING ASSOCIATES Inc. Oct. 22, 1959 (July 31, 1958 ; Aug. 20, 1958], Nos. 24727/58 and 26807/58. Class 142 (2). Card punching apparatus, particularly for carpet weaving, includes a drum 72, Fig. 1, for feeding a design sheet 65 line-by-line past a guide 74, reading of each line of the design being facilitated by a row of illuminated segments 82 which are switched on in succession, each segment exhibiting eight squares of the design. The operator presses in succession buttons 78 corresponding to the colours of the eight illuminated squares, an indication of the selection being given by a digital display 314 ; if a mistake is made, it can be corrected by operating the relevant cancelling switch 316 and then pressing the correct button 78. The information is passed through an encoding unit controlled by switches 302, which are pre-set in accordance with the desired relationship between the buttons 78 and the holes in the cards. The signals from the encoding unit control solenoids in a head 212, Fig. 17, which actuate rods 202 coupled by levers 206 to stops 202a which are thereby positioned over any punches 204 that are required to operate ; the head 212 acts simultaneously on a column of rods 202 corresponding to two tufts of the fabric and is automatically stepped from column to column until half the punches have been set ; a second head 212 then takes over to set the remaining punches. When a whole row of the design has been dealt with, a platen 208 is raised to punch a card 211. To cut cards for a cheaper carpet, pile can be omitted on selected squares of the design by operating a switch bar 324, Fig. 1, instead of a button 78.
