Abstract

In melt-spinning fibres of a synthetic organic polymer the fibre is cooled from the temperature at the spinneret face in contact with a gaseous medium heated to maintain temperatures measured in the medium adjacent to the fibre which decrease in the direction of fibre travel to 100 DEG C. under such conditions that the temperature at the spinneret face minus any such temperature adjacent to the fibre is within the limits of 10x-30 and x+20, where x is the distance of travel in yards times 104 divided by the fibre speed in yards per second and divided by the denier per fibre. In an example, a polyethylene terephthalate is melt-spun at a spinneret face temperature of 285 DEG C. and the filaments thus formed (23 denier per filament) are wound up at 500 yards per minute. Cooling of the filaments is retarded under controlled temperature conditions by means of a muffle furnace, 7 inches high, comprising exposed electrical resistance wires coiled on the inner surface of a ceramic cylinder having an open passageway of about 3 inches diameter centred below the spinneret. The top of the furnace is sealed against the bottom of the spinning head. In a series of four different conditions of heating in the furnace, all within the specified limits, the temperatures at distances of 1/2 inch and 7,5 inches from the spinneret face are 240 DEG and 120 DEG C., 274 DEG and 132 DEG C., 286 DEG and 148 DEG C., and 300 DEG and 150 DEG C., respectively. The samples of yarn thus obtained are drawn over a plate heated to 185 DEG C. located between a preheating roll at 90 DEG C. and a cold drawing roll. In other examples, a linear polypropylene and a polyhexamethylene adipamide are melt-spun in a similar manner. Other polymers to which the invention may be applied are listed. After the filaments have been cooled to 100 DEG C. under the conditions specified, their further cooling to normal temperatures may be effected slowly or rapidly, but it is preferred to continue cooling under the specified conditions to 50 DEG C. The fibres obtained have improved uniformity, tenacity, flex life and maximum draw ratio. Specifications 461,236, 578,079 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,071,250, 2,130,523, 2,130,948, 2,190,770, 2,273,105, 2,296,202 and Belgian Specification 572,577 are referred to.
