A centrifuge drum 5, for producing coffee filtrate, is mounted with its bottom near the bottom of a container 2, which has a partition 9 below the level of filter apertures 13 in the lateral wall of the drum, a further aperture or apertures, e.g. slits 12 being provided in the bottom of the drum nearer to its axis of rotation, and on rotation of the drum filtrate is centrifuged through the filter apertures 13 into the upper compartment 11. As shown, the centrifuge casing comprises a lower part 1 housing an electric motor 3 and an upper part forming the container 2 housing the drum 5. Drum 5 is mounted on the shaft 4 of the motor 3 which passes through the base 7 of container 2 by means of a liquid-tight bearing 8. In operation, ground coffee is placed in drum 5 and water is added substantially to fill the lower compartment 10 and the coffee is left to soak. The water may be added hot or cold and may be heated by a heating element. After the required time, the motor is started and the filtrate is centrifuged through apertures 13 into compartment 10 and delivered through a spout 6. A thermal switch may be provided which, at or near boiling point, switches the motor into circuit and the heating element out. Further tuning means may be provided for the motor.
