Abstract

A synthetic plastic material, characterized by its capacity to inhibit growth of microorganisms, comprises a polymer having uniformly distributed therethrough a bacteriostatic agent selected from 2, 21-thiobis-(4, 6-dichlorophenol) or 2, 21-methylene-bis-(3, 4, 6-trichlorophenol) or a mixture thereof. Polymers specified are polyethylene, polystyrene, styreneacrylonitrile copolymer and cellulose acetate butyrate. The examples describe the effect of the compositions, also comprising pigment, against micrococcus pyogenes var. aureus. Applications specified are drinking vessels, toys, mouthpieces and packaging for food.
