Abstract

Reflective coating compositions comprise high refractive index transparent glass microspheres and aluminium pigment paste dispersed in the following compositions: (a) nitrocellulose wet with ethanol, oil-modified alkyd resin, dibutyl phthalate, butyl lactate, xylol, and butanol; (b) as (a) with the addition of an organic derivative of bentonite made into a paste with ethylene glycol monoethyl ether; (c) polyamide-modified alkyd resin, naphtha, mineral spirits, a metal naphthenate drier, and butyraldoxime as an antiskinning agent; (d) phenol-aldehyde resin, coumarone resin, neoprene rubber milled with zinc oxide, magnesium oxide, sodium acetate, an antioxidant, ethanol, toluene and butyl lactate.ALSO:A reflective coating composition comprises a mixture of varnish solution, finely divided metal flake reflective pigment, and transparent glass microspheres having a refractive index of at least 1.8, the pigment particles being of substantially smaller size than the microspheres. During drying of the composition, movement of the metal pigment particles occurs, so that the front surfaces of the glass microspheres become optically exposed, and the pigment particles become contiguous to the back surfaces. The glass microspheres preferably have a diameter of from 25 to 75 microns, and are present in a volume concentration of 50 to 85%. If the paint is to be viewed under dry conditions, the optimum value of the refractive index of the microspheres is about 1.9; if wet with water, about 2.5; and if covered with a transparent varnish, coloured or clear, to provide a flat outer surface, about 2.8. The effective refractive index of the microspheres may be increased by providing them with a concentric transparent coating of lower refractive index. Mixtures of microspheres of differing refractive indices may be used. The metal pigment may be aluminium, bronze powder, copper, tin, German silver or nickel flake, or gold or silver leaf. A colloidal suspending agent, e.g. an organic derivative of bentonite, may also be present. The varnish may be an oil or spirit resin varnish or a lacquer. In examples, the varnishes used comprise nitrocellulose and an oil-modified alkyd resin, or a polyamide modified alkyd resin, or a phenolic resin, cumarone resin and neoprene rubber mix. Specifications 556,935 and 641,547 are referred to.
