Abstract

865,847. Gear-finishing. NATIONAL BROACH & MACHINE CO. March 25, 1959 [May 14, 1958], No. 10344/59. Class 83 (3). A gear shaving or honing machine comprises gearing for rotating work and tool spindles 10, 16 in timed relation and means operable during the rotation to effect a circumferential adjustment between them. A gear 14 on the workspindle 10 is driven to rotate the tool 18 through a gear 24, on a carrier 26 adjusted by a screw 28, and a gear 22 splined to the tool-spindle 16. The gear 24 is elongated to allow transverse adjustment for larger gears or tools. In a machine having a knee 42, Figs. 4 and 6, adjusted by a wheel 50, a work-support 52 is traversed by a motor 60 and a screw 56. A motor 88 through a pulley 82 drives the gear 14 which is adjustable angularly by a wheel 78 engaging a nut 74 on a bracket 66 bolted to the knee 42. Rotation of the wheel causes axial movement of a sleeve 92 having a helicallysplined connection with the gear 14. The tool mounted on a plate 96 may be angularly adjusted about the common normal to vary the crossed axes setting. The teeth of the honing tool may be reversely-crowned.
