Abstract

860,070. Door closers. ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO. Ltd. Feb. 20, 1958 [Feb. 23, 1957; May 9, 1957], Nos. 6156/57 and 14779/57. Class 65(1). A spring door closer is provided with a hydraulic check piston co-axial with its closer shaft. A closer shaft 4 is in screw threaded engagement with a hollow piston 5 having lugs 5a engaging axial slots 6b in a cylinder 6a. The lower end of a helical spring 16 encircling the cylinder engages a passage in the base of the casting 6, (see Fig. 3, not shown), the upper end engages a screw collar 11 splined to the shaft 4. On rotation of the shaft in a door opening direction the spring is stressed and the piston rises, fluid passing from within the piston through ports 5b, controlled by a spring-biased non-return valve 7, to the underside of the piston. When the shaft is rotated in the opposite direction by the controlling spring the fluid beneath the piston escapes only by flowing past an adjustable restricting valve, (Fig. 3, not shown). In a modification, shown in the Figure accompanying the second Provisional Specification, the base of the piston presents a plunger reciprocable within a passage in the shaft, non-return valves being fitted to permit the pumping of lubricant along the passage as the closer operates.
