853,469. Valves. BAIRD & TATLOCK (LONDON) Ltd., MATTHEWS, A. I., [Representative of MATTHEWS, S. J.], CHAPMAN, D. R., DOBNEY, C. S., and MONK, P. R. Dec. 18, 1956 [Dec. 21, 1955], No. 36704/55. Class 135. In a diaphragm valve having a body 1 formed with two or more passageways 2, 3 each opening at one end into the flat base surface of a circular cavity 6 formed in a face of the body, a flexible diaphragm 8 is clamped by a ring 16 against the base of the cavity over an area surrounding the openings and is moved to connect and disconnect the openings by a rod 15 which forms the armature of an electromagnet 19. When the electromagnet is energized the armature is attracted to the polepiece 27 and opens the valve against the force of closure spring 30. In another embodiment (not shown), the electromagnet is omitted and fluid pressure acting through one of the openings on the underside of the diaphragm against the force of spring causes the valve to act as a safety valve ; adjustment of spring force being provided by screwed plug. Alternatively, the rod 15 may be fitted with a cam lever which when rotated acts on the top face of ring 16 to open the valve. The diaphragm is formed of a flexible impervious material bonded to a resilient material and a projection on this part is forced into an axial bore of a stud also having a diametred drilling and grub-screw attachment to the rod 15.
