Abstract

852,706. Mounting engines. MORRIS MOTORS Ltd. July 7, 1959 [April 9, 1958], No. 11175/58. Classes 79(3) and 79(4). A motor vehicle with an integral body and chassis construction has its front wheels 16, Fig. 1, independently suspended on a sub-frame 5 which carries the front end of the vehicle body 1 and the entire mass of a power unit 12 disposed transversely. to drive the wheels 16. The subframe 5 is fabricated from sheet metal panels welded to form box-section members 8 to 11 and supports the latter on rubber blocks 13, a further rubber block 15 and a rubberbushed tie rod 14 serving to steady the power unit. Rubber mountings 2, 2A, 3 and 4 loaded principally in shear connect the sub-frame and two upright extensions 19 thereon with the body 1, the mounting 2 representing an alternative form to 2A. The wheel suspension linkages are connected to spring units of the hydraulic diaphragmdisplacer type and are connected, by tongue - reaction members 21 with the sub-frame. In Fig. 4, the vehicle body 1 is bolted directly to a subframe 23 at 24, 24 and 25, 25 and is also connected to extensions 29, 29 on the rear transverse member 28 of the sub-frame. Rubber blocks 31 are interposed between the sub-frame and the power unit 12 which is also connected to a transverse member of the body by a rubber-bushed tie rod 32. The same transverse member is connected by telescopic hydraulic dampers with the wheel suspension linkages which have a ball-joint and strut connection with rubber springs constructed as described in Specification 763,432. The power unit in both constructions has the changespeed and differential gearing accommodated within the engine crank-case as described in Specification 832,004 and drives the wheels through rubberized universal couplings 18 constructed as described in Specification 808,807.
