A machine for polishing a surface of a workpiece of wood or other material has a cylindrically shaped buffing roller comprising a plurality of discs of suitable buffing material arranged side by side on a shaft, a conveyer being provided with carriers arranged at desired distances from one another, means being provided for adjusting the spacing between the buffing roller and the conveyer, the adjusting means comprising an arm which carries the buffing roller and which is pivotally mounted on a housing in which the buffing roller is located, further means being provided for adjusting the position of the housing relatively to the conveyer. A workpiece 14 is carried through the machine by a conveyer 3 with lugs 2 and driven by a motor 4. The workpiece is held on to the conveyer by resiliently mounted felt-covered rollers 23. A housing 6 is vertically adjustable on the machine frame 1 by four threaded spindles 9 simultaneously rotated through worm gear drives 8 by a handwheel 7. Buffing rollers 11 comprising a plurality of fabric discs are carried by links 12, 12a pivoted to the housing 6. The rollers are adjustable for height by threaded spindles 17 rotated through gears 16 by handwheels 15. The rollers are driven by motors 19 or pivoted box plates 21 and their shafts may be axially movable. The first buffing roller preferably has a lower rotational speed than the second. Devices 24 for applying a polishing preparation to the buffing rollers are provided ; alternatively, liquid polishing preparation may be applied to the rollers or workpiece automatically at predetermined intervals.
