Abstract
845,590. Mechanical couplings for cable armouring. SUBMARINE CABLES Ltd. July 10, 1958 [July 10, 1957], No. 21932/57. Class 38(1). In anchoring an armoured cable, for example to a repeater housing, the armouring wires A, after passage through a central cable opening 2 in a fixed plate 6, are returned in groups through a ring of apertures 1 in the plate concentric with the opening 2 and then passed over a first annular clamping member 15 and through and round a second annular clamping member 16, said clamping members loosely surrounding the cable and having grooves into which the wires are bedded and secured by bindings 17, 18. The plate 6 is bolted to a backing plate 3 so that the wires A, where they pass round plate 6, are pressed against a resilient buffer pad 4. When the cable is under tensile stress, the armour wires are held against the rear of plate 6 both by friction and the bindings 17, 18, and the clamping members tend to move along the cable so as to grip the wires between them.
