Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0837086/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 and R2 each represent a hydrogen atom, an alkyl or an aryl radical and R3 represents a hydrogen atom or a C1-4 alkyl group. ("Aryl" being defined as an unsubstituted phenyl or an alkyl-, halo- or alkoxy substituted phenyl group) and the preparation thereof by reacting an a :b -dihalogenonitrile: <FORM:0837086/IV (b)/2> wherein X represents a chlorine or bromine atom, with a thioglycollic acid ester in the presence of a condensation agent, and, if desired, hydrolysing the ester to form the free acid. a - b - Dihalogenonitriles are prepared from the corresponding a :b -unsaturated nitriles by addition of halogen. They can also be prepared from a :b -unsaturated nitriles substituted in the a -position.
