Abstract

835,030. Welding by fusion tube expanders. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Sept. 23, 1957 [Sept. 24, 1956], No. 29198/56. Class 83 (4). In a support for the ends of tubular parts, e.g. parts of a jet pipe for a gas-turbine engine, to be butt-welded, in which shoes are carried on arms extending radially from a hub, the shoes have alternately diverging and converging end surfaces and when the rams are fully extended provide a continuous annular support for the butting ends on each side of the joint. The rams when fully extended expand the ends of the tubular parts. The hub 29 is mounted on a shaft 15 rotatable within an arm 14 on a pedestal 12 and compressed-air pipes 62, 63 are connected through bores in the shaft 15 to the rams 30, 31. The structure of the rams and the connecting pipes ensures that the rams 31 carrying the outwardly diverging shoes 44 are expanded before and contracted after the rams 30 carrying the outwardly converging shoes 37. The shoes 37, 44 have copperfacings with a peripheral groove 78 which backs the joint and to which argon may be fed through a bore in the shaft 15. The tubes are supported at one end on a tail-stock (not shown) and at the other end on a mounting 25 rotatable about and adjustable along the arm 14. The shoes are moved first by low pressure air into engagement with the tubes 10, 11 and when the pressure in the supply line builds up to its maximum a switch is operated so that highpressure air can be supplied to the rams to expand the ends of the tubes 10, 11. Copper clamps 80 are secured on both sides of the joint and the tubes are welded using an argon shielded arc-welding head 24 carried by the pedestal. The shoes are retracted, after welding, by high-pressure air. Welding wire is fed to the weld by an arrangement, Fig. 6, consisting of a reel 82, feed rollers 84 and guide 86 mounted on a compound slide 100, 101 on an adjustably pivoted platform 98. The platform is mounted on a telescopic stand 88 the height of which is determined by adjustment of bolts 87. When welding is completed a ram 94 lifts and rotates the platform 98 to move the guide 86 clear of the weld.
