Abstract

A porous plastic film for use in the dressing of wounds is produced from a mixture comprising a thermoplastic resin, e.g. polyvinylchloride, a pore-forming ingredient, e.g. salt or sugar, and staple fibre, e.g. cotton linters, rayon staples, or polyamide and polyester staples, by extruding or otherwise forming the mixture so that the fibres lie predominantly in the lengthwise direction of the finished film, thereafter removing the pore-forming ingredient by leaching, e.g. by passing the film through water. A solvent and a plasticizer for the resin, and a liquid, e.g. glycerine, which is incompatible with the other ingredients, may also be incorporated in the mixture which after extrusion to a film 0.020 inches thick is further calendered to 0.010 inches thickness. Examples comprise polyvinyl chloride; polypropylene sebacate; sodium chloride; glycerine; dimethylcyclohexanone; and natural or synthetic fibres.ALSO:A porous plastic film for use in the dressing of wounds is produced from a mixture comprising a thermoplastic resin, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, a pore-forming ingredient, e.g. salt or sugar, and staple fibre, e.g. cotton linters, rayon staples, or polyamide and polyester staples, by extruding or otherwise forming the mixture so that the fibres lie predominantly in the lengthwise direction of the finished film, thereafter removing the pore-forming ingredient by leaching, e.g. by passing the film through water.
