Abstract

830,569. Pipe couplings. AEROTEC CORPORATION. Nov. 28, 1957, No. 37177/57. Class 99(1). A disconnectible coupling for a pressurized suit of air-craft personnel and for triggering an emergency oxygen supply, comprises separable, lower and upper parts 10, 13, the part 13 having an upwardly extending locking blade 16 formed with an upwardly opening U-shape groove in one side face thereof, and received in a slot 17 extending upwardly from the bottom of the part 13, a horizontally slidable shuttle in the part 13 provided with a laterally extending pin 23 which moves in the U-shaped groove to lock the parts together when the pin is located in the bight 20 of the groove, manually-operable means to move the shuttle against the action of a spring 24 to bring the pin into alignment with the forward branch 18 of the groove, means to move the shuttle upon upward movement of the coupling to bring the pin into alignment with the rear branch 19 of the groove, and a triggering mechanism having an operating element engaged by the shuttle on rearward movement thereof from a central position to trigger an emergency oxygen supply and disengaged from the shuttle on movement forwardly from the central position. As shown, the parts 10, 13 have respectively air and oxygen inlet and outlet passages 11, 14 and electric connections 12, 15. The branches 18, 19 of the locking blade 16 are parallel and inclined upwardly and rearwardly, and the shuttle is moved forwardly or rearwardly by a lever 28 pivoted on the part 10 and formed with an arm 29 passing through a slot 30 in the part 13 and into a notch 31 in the shuttle. An arm 32 connected to a verticallyslidable rod 33 is biased upwardly by a spring 35, and secured by a lanyard to the aircraft. The part 13 is secured by a bracket 39 to the pilot's ejector seat. When the latter moves upwardly carrying therewith the part 13 the lever 28 is rotated to move the shuttle rearwardly and thereby bring the pin 23 into alignment with the branch 19, the pin moving upwardly in that branch to release the parts 10, 13. A pivoted lever which has one arm 42 projecting into a slot 43 in the shuttle and an arm 45 connected with a triggering mechanism 46 of the control valve 46<SP>1</SP> of a reserve oxygen supply, is actuated as the pin 23 travels upwardly in the branch 19. Manual operation of the shuttle to release the parts 10, 13 without actuation of the triggering mechanism is accomplished by pressure exerted on a knob 41 of the lever 28, inadvertent operation of the lever being prevented by a safety pin engaged in a hole 47 in the lever.
