Abstract

823,353. Blasting cartridges. DU PONT DE NEMDURS & CO., E. I. Aug. 12, 1957 [Sept. 7, 1956], No. 25418/57. Class 9(1) [Also in Group XII] Acartridge for blasting open a channel for the molten metal in an electric furnace comprises an insulating casing 2 containing a detonating explosive, e.g. R.D.X. A pole or handle 3 for placing the cartridge in position extends into the casing 2 and is bored axially to house a detonating fuze cord 5, which is connected to a conventional electric igniter (not shown). The pole 3 may be of fibre-board and the casing may be made from a gypsum-perlite composition reinforced with fibre-glass. The fuze cord may be omitted and the electric leads are then taken through the pole 3. A booster charge may be placed adjacent the main charge 1. Cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine, PETN, pentolite and amatols are given as alternative detonating charges.
