Abstract

821,935. Ammunitionprojectiles and selfpropelled missiles. METALLBAU SEMLER G.m.b.H. Sept. 14, 1955 [Sept. 15, 1954], No. 26323/55. Classes 9(1) and 9(2) [Also in Group XXXIII] A shell is propelled and a self-propelled missile is propelled and/or controlled by the emission of flames in regions of high or low pressure, flame-holders being provided to localize the flames in said regions. A shell 1 is provided forward of its nose 3 with a hollow extension 6 partitioned at. 7 to provide a compartment 8 for fuel and another compartment 9 which houses a fuel pump 10 and a control box 19 operated by pressure air from a pressure head 20. The pump. supplies fuel through pipe 12 to a nozzle 13, the fuel being ignited by a spark-plug 16 and both pump and, sparkplug circuit are energized from control box 19 when the shell has reached a predetermined speed. The flame generated by nozzle 13 is located in a high pressure zone of the shell casing and the subsequentheating of the surrounding air is stated to create additional thrust. In order that the heat may be contained within said zonea flameholder 14 is provided supported on extension 6 by brackets 15. A variety of forms of flameholder and nozzle are described. An electro-mechanical system is described for controlling an aerodyne wherein a nozzle is orientally mounted in a swivel joint for adjustment by a fluidpressure jack controlled by an electrically operated valve and other fixed burners are selectively operated. in areas of high or low pressure under the control of electro-mechanically operated valves to provide directional control of the aerodyne.
