Abstract

821,171. Waveguide accessories. MARIE, G. R. P. March 15, 1957 [March 16, 1956; Nov. 12, 1956], No. 8609/57. Class 40 (8). [Also in Group XL (c)] In a microwave radar (see Group XL (c)), a cavity resonator coupling containing ferrite material blocks transmission between a rectangular waveguide and an aerial by the action of applied steady magnetic field on the circularly-polarized (C.P.) waves in the coupler. In one embodiment cavity resonators 21, 22, Fig. 3, coupled by slots 23 lie between guide 3 and aerial 18 and each contains soft iron and ferrite slugs 28, 29 respectively. High-permeability plates 24-26 close the magnetic circuit of coil 30 producing fields 31, 32 which respectively detune one cavity for one direction of rotation of C.P. and the other cavity for the other direction. In a second embodiment a single cavity 4, Fig. 6, is used to produce the same effect. The cavity, tuned by dielectric rods 54, carries ferrite sleeve 47 surrounded by ferrite pot 50 enclosing coil 51. In the application to a directive aerial system (see Group XL(c)), each aerial element has a coupler and the coils form sections of a delay line an input pulse to which causes elevation scanning by successive opening of transmission between aerial elements and radar transmitter/receiver. Specification 800,056 is referred to.
