Abstract

816,786. Road vehicle spring suspensions; hydropneumatic springs. EHRENREICH & CIE, A. Oct. 1, 1957 [Oct. 12, 1956], No. 30684/57. Classes 108(2) and 108(3) In a hydro-pneumatic spring unit comprising a cylinder and a piston, one of which is connected with the underframe and the other with the wheel of a vehicle, one face of the piston acting through a column of liquid on a volume of gas which is compressed in a chamber of variable capacity and which acts on one end of the cylinder, the other face of the piston determines the volume of a chamber at the other end of the cylinder in such a way that the piston and this latter end of the cylinder co-operate to form a pump for the displacement of a hydraulic liquid in a pipe system which is in communication with the column of liquid, the unit being thus selflevelling. When the vehicle is stationary, pistons 9, 10 enclose a volume of oil which is determined by the setting of valve 24 which also determines the ground clearance b of the vehicle. Under load, gas cushion 11 is compressed and its volume reduced simultaneously, valve 24 opens to permit oil to flow from accumulator 19, which contains compressed gas in space 29, through channels 18, 25, 15 into chamber 12 until the original ground clearance is re-established, when valve 4 closes again. Wheel deflections of short duration do not cause changes in ground clearance to be made since valve 24 is not open long enough. If the rise and fall of the wheel is slow there will be transfer of oil from accumulator 19 to chamber 12 and back again. Reciprocations of piston 10 draw oil from sump 21 into chamber 13 through pipe 16 via non-return valve 20 and force it back through pipe 16, non-return valve 17 and pipe 18 to accumulator 19. Pipe 7 takes hydraulic fluid to other accessories requiring hydraulic power. Initial inflation takes place through valve 14. Adjustable non-return valve 22, preferably dashboard mounted, provides a means of adjusting the damping characteristics of the system by varying the oil pressure in the accumulator.
