Abstract

810,956. Surgical tables. ALLEN & HANBURYS Ltd. April 11, 1957 [April 13, 1956- Nov. 26, 1956], Nos. 11362/56 and 36161/56. Class 52(3) The platform of a surgical table is in two sections 2, 3 and can be tilted as a unit about a transverse pivot 8 carried by a yoke 7 which is connected by a longitudinal pivot 9 to the support column 10. A drive shaft with a single operating handle &c. 12 extends beneath the platform at one end and three independent drives can be selected by an adjacent lever 14 to tilt the platform about either pivot axis or to adjust the relative angularity of the sections 2, 3. Removable head and leg extensions 5, 6 are provided and are preferably interchangeable. The leg extension may also be angularly adjustable by a fourth drive gear and can be in two longitudinal sections. The drive shaft 13, Fig. 3 is moved axially by the gear lever 14, working in a gate 15, to operate a dog clutch 16 which when engaged drives a gear train 17, 18 and bevel wheel 19 operating a shaft 21, Fig. 1, which rotates a screwed transverse shaft 23 by which the platform can be tilted in either direction about the longitudinal pivot 9. A hollow shaft 25 surrounding the shaft 13 is controlled by the lever 14, when the dog clutch 16 is disengaged, to rock a plate 26 carrying two idler pinions which can selectively connect a spur wheel on the drive shaft to lay shaft pinions 29, 30. As shown in Fig. 3 one idler pinion 27 is engaged with its corresponding pinion 29 and rotates a bevel gear 31 operating a screw threaded shaft in a sleeve 33 to tilt the platform about the transverse pivot 8. Alternatively the other idler pinion can engage the pinion 30 to drive the bevel gear 34 which operates a similar screwed shaft in a sleeve 36 to alter the angle between the platform sections 2, 3. The additional drive for the leg extension adjustment can be derived by fitting a two-way selectively operated gearing to the dog clutch 16 whereby it can operate either to tilt the platform about the longitudinal pivot 9 or to adjust the angle of the leg extension section or sections.
