Abstract

A facing layer is formed on a masonry block by placing in a mould a mixture of a liquid saturated epoxy ether resin having a 1,2-epoxy equivalency greater than 1 and a finely-divided acid-resistant mineral filler, and a hardening agent, the filler constituting between about 50 and 90 per cent by weight of the total of filler, resin and hardening agent introducing the block into the mould, and curing the resin while the block is in contact therewith. The block may be made from cinders, slag, cement, "Haydite" (Registered Trade Mark), clay, concrete or the like. The preferred filler is sand having a gradation of particle sizes; gravel and alumina can also be used. The preferred resins are prepared by reacting dihydric phenols with epichlorhydrin in alkaline solution, but 1, 2-epoxy-containing polyethers of polyhydric alcohols can also be used. The hardening agent may be, e.g. alkalies, alkali phenoxides, metal halides, phosphoric acid and esters thereof, and amino compounds. Curing is preferably accelerated by heating, e.g. to 150 DEG C. The mould may be made of heavy gauge aluminium foil, which may be stripped off after curing. Specification 792,334 is referred to.
