Abstract

808,376. Centrifugal strainer separators. BAKER PERKINS Ltd. Dec. 2, 1955 [Dec. 13, 1954], No. 34586/55. Class 46. In a centrifugal separating machine of the " pusher " type a casing 26 houses a basket 30 mounted on an end wall 28 keyed to a rotary shaft 14. The shaft 14 is hollow to accommodate a shaft 22 rotatable with it and supporting at one end a conical pusher plate 31 carrying a scraper ring 34 adapted to move over the basket 30 when the shaft 22 is reciprocated by a piston 20 working in a cylinder 18. The piston is actuated hydraulically in the forward or propelling direction of the scraper 34 under control of a control valve 78 and distribution valve 65; its return stroke results from accumulation of material on the basket 30. Mounted on the pusher plate 31 is frusto-conical distributer 35 recessed in its inner surface to accommodate filter screens 40, 41 of which the one 40, adjacent the distributer 35, is woven and the other is of mesh. The space between the screen 40 and the distributer 35 communicates through channels 43, 44 with the space between the pusher plate 31 and the basket wall 28 whence it passes to the easing 26 ; the easing is divided into compartments which separate this liquor and liquor from different parts of the basket 30 from one another. Slurry to be treated enters the distribution core 35 from an inlet pipe 39 and while the liquor drains away as above described, the solids move towards the base of the core 35 to traverse passages 37 between lugs which support the cone on the pusher plate 31 and accumulate on the inner surface of the basket 30, this accumulation pushing back the scraper 34 and pusher plate 31. The return may be slowed down by partially closing a valve in the return circuit from the valve 65. A nozzle 52a sprays wash water on the slurry on the screen 41 and a pipe 54 on to the material on the basket 30. As the solids pass from the basket 30 between a rim 46 thereon and a member 49 having a radial flange 49a and a frusto-conical one 51, the wetter and drier solids from adjacent the basket and more remote from it are intermixed. An electric motor drives, through a belt, a shaft 14a mounted on the cylinder 18 which is formed as an enlargement of the shaft 14.
