Abstract

806.331. Eddy-current vibration-dampers. GENESLAY, R. H. J. Oct. 8, 1956 [Oct. 8, 1955], No. 30638/56. Class 108(3) An electro-magnetic device for damping linear movements comprises a hollow elongated housing 9 of magnetic material which is lined with a plurality of first perforated members 20 of magnetic material, and a plurality of second perforated members of a non-magnetic, but electrically conducting, material, the members 20 and 21 being arranged alternately in side-by-side relationship, so that the perforations therein form a duct, in which is movable, a magnet 1 having pole pieces 4, 5. In operation, when the magnet 1 is moved longitudinally of the housing by a spindle 6, eddy currents are produced in the members 21, the effect of which is to act upon the magnet in such a manner as to oppose its movement. The pole pieces 4, 5, are spaced from the inside periphery of the members 20, 21, by means of supporting members 7, 8. The cross-section of themembers 20, 21, may alternatively be trapzium-shaped (Fig. 2, not shown). The periphery of each pole 4, 5, may be formed with two axially spaced annular recesses (Fig. 3, not shown).
